Lab diamonds vs natural diamonds for grillz

When choosing iced grillz, separate two decisions: the design of the piece and the origin of its diamonds. First decide how much coverage you want. Then compare the same design with lab-grown or natural diamonds.

What is the difference?

Natural diamonds form through geological processes. Lab-grown diamonds are produced in a laboratory. The Gemological Institute of America explains that lab-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds, while their growth characteristics allow specialist identification.

Lab-grown diamonds are not the same thing as moissanite or cubic zirconia. Those are different materials. A quote should identify the stone type explicitly rather than using “iced” as the complete specification. Read GIA's explanation of diamond origin.

Compare the same grillz design

Studio Bite's catalogue lists a 14k single iced cap at £950 with lab diamonds and £1,350 with natural diamonds. The 14k iced-outline cap is £750 with lab diamonds or £1,050 with natural diamonds. The outline and fully iced cap are different designs, so compare matching versions before judging the price difference.

Look beyond the origin

Ask about the stone specification, coverage, setting and metal as well as diamond origin. A photograph alone cannot establish a stone's origin or grading. Confirm what documentation, if any, accompanies your particular order; do not assume every small stone is supplied with an individual laboratory report.

Choose for your priorities

If your priority is a particular iced design within a budget, compare the lab-diamond version first. If natural origin is important to you, ask for the natural-diamond quote for the same piece. Avoid treating either choice as a promise of resale value.

Before production

Your agreed brief should make the gold karat, diamond origin, tooth count and layout clear. A single iced cap, an outline and an eight-tooth arch require different specifications. If you are mixing plain and iced elements, ask for a quote for that exact combination.
